It has been believed that people who read for pleasure develop better imagination and language skills than people who prefer to watch TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

( Written by Harmeet)

I partially agree with statement because I believe that television has as much coverage of knowledge as books. Television actually creates more opportunities and interests of learning to people. So both, TV and books are helpful for improving imagination and language skills.

Reading is a very old method of getting information. Reading a book gives us more in-depth information that T.V cannot give us. It makes us imagine and create mental pictures in our head and we have the freedom to control the movements when we visualize the characters in the book. Reading makes our brain think, reflect, and have a chance to be creative. When we read a story we need to use our imagination. A book usually gives a lot of description about people, places and things in a story, so we can create pictures in our mind. In addition the conversations between people are often written with details that describe how the people think or feel when they are talking. When we read we use a lot of imagination to help to see the characters in the story.

On the other hand T.V also helps to people to extent his or her range of interests. People can find out many new things and make many existing discoveries for themselves. In addition to these practical benefits, television improves children’s vocabulary, their memory and gives them the opportunity to gain more knowledge. In modern world children must learn faster and use all contemporary technology in order to succeed. Television can teach us important values and lessons of life. In addition, television can render audience a 3D learning environment: audios, images and words. This combination of multi-media cannot be achieved by books.

To sum up, I believe that television gives all people the opportunity to learn what they cannot learn from books. So we can say that TV also improves our imagination and good language skills. We can learn lot of stuff by watching television. Just watch the discovery channel and there is so much to learn. So we can say that T.V and reading both should complement each other and help in the holistic development of individuals.

  3. Dear Kiran,
It might be more helpful if you put an indication on the top of each writing. For example, if this is a writing from a student and has not been corrected, you could put an icon to indicate that. Furthermore, you can also put a link to the corrected version of the essay. Doing that, your reader can fully benefit and improve their writing skills.

    Wish you all the best!
