It is better for children if the whole families (e.g. aunts, uncles and grandparents) are involved in the children's upbringing, rather than their fathers and mothers only. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

I have written this essay in two versions - One for agree and one for disagree. The first essay is in favour of joint families and the second in favour of nuclear families.

(Agree)

The rising trend of nuclear families and its effect on today’s children has led to the question whether children should be raised in joint families in which aunts, uncles and grandparents contribute in bringing up children. Although a joint family is not without its drawbacks, I firmly believe that a joint family is better in raising children. A number of arguments surround my opinion.

To begin with, in a joint family, children's upbringing becomes very easy as there are so many people to take care of the child. So being the mother or father, even if you are busy in life with work or any other commitments, you have no need to worry about your child as you know he/she will be taken care of, fed properly and even made sure that homework is completed. This is a huge relief especially in times of sickness of the child. So in a joint family, you can be totally focused as far as your career or work is concerned, without the tension of your children.

Secondly, a joint family teaches the values of adjusting and flexibility, which can go a long way in life when such children marry or when they have to live an independent life in a totally new or different environment, which unfortunately people brought up in a nuclear family with all comforts and less adjustments might find difficult. Children living in a joint family learn how to deal with people and understand the dynamics of human psychology, as they are staying with various people of different attitude, perception and behaviour. In the long run, it becomes easy to gauge and understand people and their emotions.

Finally, parents do not have to deal with attention-related problems which are usually by-products of nuclear family systems, where the child, finding both parents absent and no one else from the family, usually resorts to attention seeking behavior. Such behaviour can manifest as being sad, insolent, and reclusive among other things.

To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, in a joint family a child is reared by a number of people, thus dividing work and saving time. The child also learns qualities of understanding, adjusting, & selflessness. For working parents, it’s a blessing to have reliable, trustworthy caretakers for their child. Therefore it is better to raise a child in a joint family.

Plan Followed
Intro: Agree
Para 1:
-          Divides work and saves time
-          You can be totally focused as far as your career or work is concerned, without the tension of your children.
Para 2: child also learns qualities of understanding, adjusting, & selflessness.
Para 3: No risk of attention-related disorders
Conclusion: Reiterate your point

(disagree)

It is a highly debatable issue whether children should be raised in joint families in which aunts, uncles and grandparents contribute in bringing up children or by parents alone as in nuclear families. Although a joint family has many advantages, I firmly believe that a nuclear family is better in raising children. A number of arguments surround my opinion.

To begin with, in a nuclear family, parents can bring up their children with their own set of values and principles, without any “interference”. This is something that can be easily established in a nuclear family, wherein the child has to follow only one set of rules, and is not confused with varying opinions. For instance, if a person’s values are not that traditional, and he wants his child to be more broad-minded, he may not be able to do so in a joint family, if his independent values don't match with that of the majority.

Secondly, there is more space for individuality and self-expression in a nuclear family set-up. Nuclear families make the child more self reliant and decisive as he/she is not as interdependent on a large number of family members to make decisions and take action. This independent streak can come in handy, as the child grows into an adult and has to make many decisions himself/herself.

Finally, communication channels between the child and parent can also be more open and transparent, in a nuclear family, as parents have their attention focused on their child, without having to divide their time with too many household responsibilities and between other members of the household.

To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, in a nuclear family a child is reared by the parents alone. Therefore, they can instill whatever values they want in their child. The child is also more independent and has better relations with parents. Therefore it is better to raise a child in a nuclear family.
